3 killed in Portsmouth, Virginia, shooting

At least three people were killed and another person was critically injured in a shooting in Portsmouth, a city in Virginia, on Tuesday morning. 

In a Twitter post, Portsmouth police said the incident took place around 9.30 am near the 1500 block of Maple Avenue. The victims were all adults, police said.

“The PPD is investigating a gunshot wound incident that occurred near the 1500 block of Maple Ave, around 9:36 am. Three adults suffered fatal injuries and another adult is in critical condition,” Portsmouth police tweeted. 

Police did not give out much information about the incident. They initially said that authorities are working to identify victims, suspects and a motive.

“We are looking at all possible motives; we haven’t identified one yet,” police spokesperson Victoria Varnedoe said, as per US News. 

Portsmouth has witnessed several shooting incidents in the last week. Multiple people were shot in a fatal shooting on Monday and in a non-fatal one on Tuesday morning. Both the incidents occured within a 24-hour period. Shooting also took place on Saturday and Sunday. 

The police Chief Renado Prince, in a press conference, later in the day urged anyone with information about any of the recent shootings to come forward.

“If we don’t have the community giving us those hits, those clues, those leads that we can follow up, we are powerless,” Renado said.

He further listed a several incidents since June 1. The police authorities believe that two of them are gang-related, Renado said, further adding that the city has not seen an overall increase in gang gun violence.

The Police Chief added that he was on the scene earlier this morning. 

“How often do y’all see them in the community? They’re at city hall. They’re sitting behind their desks, but they need to be out here in the community. The families are hurting out here. They’re not in the city council hall. They’re not hurting down there. They’re hurting out here in the communities,” a community member said on 10 On Your Side, as per wavy.com.
