Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani on Wednesday announced that his company’s digital arm Jio “has designed and developed a complete 5G solution from scratch.” Ambani made the announcement during the company’s 43rd Annual General Meeting, which was held virtually in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Ambani added that the technology would be ready for trials as soon as the 5G spectrum is made available in India. Finally, he stated that the technology “can be ready for field deployment next year”

He added that Jio’s global-scale 4G and fiber network is powered by several core software technologies and components.”It is this capability and know-how that positions Jio on the cutting edge of another exciting frontier – 5G,” Ambani said.

Jio Platforms, with over 20 startup partners, has built world-class capabilities in technologies such as 4G, 5G, Cloud computing, Devices and OS, Big Data, AI, AR/VR, Blockchain, Natural Language Understanding and Computer Vision, he said.

He said, “Using these technologies, we can create compelling solutions across multiple industry verticals like media, financial services, new commerce, education, healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, smart manufacturing & smart mobility.”

Finally, Ambani added that Jio’s vision in the coming three years would be to connect half a billion mobile customers, a billion smart sensors, and 50 million home and business establishments.

Jio’s mobile offering clobbered the competition, offering huge discounts on its services and forcing rival firms to crash out after they were unable to keep up.

In recent months Ambani has raised more than $22 billion in a rights issue and through selling stakes in Jio Platforms, and announced last month that Reliance was now net debt free as a result.
