Roger Federer has withdrawn from the French Open after winning his third-round match, the 20-time Grand Slam champion tweeted on Sunday.

“After discussions with my team, I decided that I should withdraw from the French Open today. After two knee operations and more than a year of rehabilitation, it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure that I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery,” Federer tweeted.

Federer battled over three and a half hours on Sunday to reach the last 16 in Paris. He was due back on the court on Monday to tackle Matteo Berrettini. However, after Sunday’s match, the Swiss star admitted there are doubts he’ll make it.

“I don’t know if I am going to play. I have to decide whether or not to continue. Is it too risky to keep putting pressure on the knee? Is it a good time to rest? Every match I have to reassess the situation and see the next morning in what state I wake up and how my knee is doing. It may be even more true after a match as long as the one tonight,” the former world number one had said.
