A man was killed in a shark attack in California’s Morro Bay on Friday. 

The victim, whose name and age have not been revealed, was reportedly boogie boarding off Morro Bay City Beach around 10:40 am when he was bitten by a shark.

Local authorities rushed to the beach after receiving a report of an unresponsive man and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Confirming the attack, Morro Bay Police said in a statement, “At 10.48 am, a male surfer off State Parks Beach just north of Atascadero Road was pronounced dead at the scene. Harbor, police and fire departments responded to a report of male victim unresponsive on the beach after he was pulled from the water suffering from an apparent shark attack.”

“At the time, the victim has not been verified and San Luis Obispo County Coroners Office with State Park representatives are currently on scene, investigating the incident.”

First responders told local media that the bite appeared to be from a Great white shark, however, this is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, a sign posted by the Morro Bay Harbor Department warned that beachgoers that the water near The Pit area of Morro Bay was closed for the next 24 hours following a fatal shark attack.
