As Sourav Ganguly exits from his role as the BCCI president, the move has sparked a political storm in his native West Bengal. Many have alleged that the former Indian captain has been subjected to a political spat, which has forced him from the top role.

As per recent reports, the BCCI will not be supporting the newly ex-president for the role of ICC chairman, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seems quite irked by it. Here’s everything you need to know about how political parties in West Bengal reacted to Sourav Ganguly’s exit from the BCCI president’s role.

After news of Ganguly’s exit from BCCI emerged, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the reason behind the decision of removing the former from the board. Banerjee asked if Jay Shah, the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, could continue in his present role in Indian cricket’s regulatory body, and why Sourav Ganguly had to leave.

“When Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son, Jay Shah, could continue as the BCCI secretary, what was the harm in allowing a second term to the former Indian cricket team captain as the board’s president,” she said.

Banerjee also added that she will be discussing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about supporting Sourav Ganguly as the chairman of the ICC.

Soon after West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee’s response came out, opposition leader and BJP politician Suvendu Adhikari demanded the appointment of Sourav Ganguly as the brand ambassador of West Bengal by replacing Shah Rukh Khan.

“Mamata Banerjee should first remove Shah Rukh Khan as the brand ambassador of West Bengal. There is no reason for Khan to hold that post. Ganguly should be offered that position,” the BJP leader said.

“The Chief Minister should first do that instead of indulging in unnecessary politics on every issue. It took her so many years to realise that Sourav Ganguly is a pride of Bengal. She should have realised it before making Shah Rukh Khan the brand ambassador of the state,” Adhikari added.

The CPI-M, however, have tried maintaining a distance from the issue. Ashok Bhattacharya, former West Bengal minister and CPI-M leader urged both ruling TMC and primary opposition BJP to stay away from the issue.

“I request both BJP and Trinamool Congress to stop dragging Sourav in this manner. He is beyond politics. However, I agree that Sourav is the fittest person to represent in ICC and I will be extremely happy to see him as the chairman there,” he quipped.
