Texas school shooting: Here is what world leaders had to say

Yet another incident of gun violence rocked the US on Tuesday after a teenage gunman stormed into an elementary school in Texas and killed at least 19 children and three adults. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several other world leaders offered their condolences to the United States on Wednesday for the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.  

“The people of Ukraine share the pain of the relatives and friends of the victims and all Americans,” Zelensky tweeted.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also tweeted support for Americans, saying “Canadians are mourning with you.”  

“My heart breaks for everyone affected by the horrific shooting in Texas today. I’m thinking of the parents, the families, the friends, the classmates, and the coworkers whose lives have been forever changed – Canadians are mourning with you, and are here for you,” tweeted the Canadian PM.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron also shared Americans’ horror at the age of the victims.  

“19 victims were under age 10. Children and teachers were murdered in a cowardly attack in their Texas school. We share the shock and grief of the American people, and the rage of those who are fighting to end the violence,” tweeted the French President.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also commented on the shooting, appearing to call for US politicians to enact more stringent gun control laws as her country did following the 2019 Christchurch shootings.

“I think about what happened to us, and all I can reflect is: We are a very pragmatic people. When we saw something like that happen, everyone said, ‘Never again.’ And so then it was incumbent on us as politicians to respond to that,” she told CBS on Tuesday night.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tweeted, “Our thoughts are with the injured and the bereaved of the victims of this inconceivable massacre for which hardly any words can be found.”
