Jos Buttler was appointed England’s new white-ball captain on Thursday, just two days after World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket.

31-year-old Buttler was recommended for the position by Rob Key, the managing director of the England cricket team.

“Jos Buttler was the perfect choice to succeed Eoin Morgan as our white-ball captain, and I had no hesitation in offering him the role,” Key said, according to a report by ESPN.

“Jos has been part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral in the transformation of the way the team has played its attacking brand of cricket over the past seven years,” he added.

Buttler stated that it was a “great honour” to succeed Morgan. The former vice-captain further added that he gives Morgan his “sincere thanks and gratitude” for leading the team.

“It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved. He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I’ll take into this role,” he said.

Buttler is set to take charge of 12 matches in the month of July.

The wicketkeeper-batter has played 151 ODI matches for his country and has scored 4,120 runs at an average of 41.20, which includes 10 centuries and 21 fifties. In T20s, he has scored 2,140 runs with an average of 34.51.

He is one of the three players from England to score hundreds in all three cricket formats. He shares the achievement with Heather Knight and Dawid Malan.
