John Motson, a legendary BBC football commentator who was one of the most well-known voices in the sport for 50 years, died at the age of 77.
He began his career as a newspaper reporter before becoming a TV and radio commentator. “Deeply saddened to hear that John Motson has died,” former England striker and now Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said on Twitter. “A quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed.”

From 1968-2018, he covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, and 29 FA Cup finals. He was known for his passion and in-depth knowledge of football. He commentated on almost 2,500 televised games. In 2001, Motson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to sports broadcasting. He is fondly known as “Motty.”
He is survived by his wife, Anne Motson. Motson received a special lifetime achievement award at the 2018 Baftas.

The pair lived together in Hertfordshire, within striking distance of Motson’s club Barnet. They have one son, Frederick, who was born in 1986.
