Aznil Bidin, whose full name is Muhammad Aznil bin Bidin, was born on June 4, 1994 and is a Malaysian weightlifter. He has now become a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist.

Representing his country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Aznil Bidin won gold with a record total of 285kgs (127kgs snatch and 158kgs C&J). Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru took silver with 273kgs (121kgs snatch and 152kgs C&J).

The 28-year-old sealed the win with 158kg in the clean and jerk.

With a total of 285kg, it put him clear at the top. Papua New Guinea athlete Morea Baru won the silver medal with a total weight of 273kg, while the bronze went to Gururaja Poojary from India with a weight of 269kg.

Earlier, Aniq Kasdan won the first gold medal for Malaysia with a combined total of 249kg in the men’s 55kg category.

This is Malaysia second gold medal in weightlifting after Aniq Kasdan was victorious in the men’s 55kg weight class earlier in the day. The duo’s success exceeded the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation’s (MWF) expectation of one gold and two silver for the 2022 edition.

“Aznil is our gold medal prospect in the 61kg based on his ranking and current form. We are confident he can deliver,” MWF president Datuk Ayub Rahmat said on Friday.

He has now become a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist. He won the gold medal in the men’s 62 kg weight class at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

During his first CWG win in 2018, Azul who is from Kedah, lifted 126kg in snatch and 162kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 288kg at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre. He improved his personal best of 279kg, which he did at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2017 making it to fourth position.

The 28-year-old has won the Hanoi Sea Games silver in the 62kg event with a new national record of 287kg.
