Who is Colin Denny? Navajo man to perform in sign language alongside Babyface at Super Bowl pregame show

The upcoming Super Bowl LVII games are going to be even more interesting as a special performance is set to happen for the deaf and hearing communities of the country. A Navajo man, Colin Denny, will be performing the patriotic song in sign language alongside Babyface.

The song, ‘America the Beautiful’, will be performed by Denny in a mix of American Sign Language and North American Indian Sign Language at the upcoming Super Bowl.

Who is Colin Denny?

Denny is a research assistant at the University of Arizona’s College of Education. He will be taking the stage at State Farm Stadium on Sunday alongside Babyface to perform the patriotic song.

Denny is a 32-year-old research fellow at the university. He was born in Shiprock, New Mexico, and grew up in Pinon. He started losing his hearing at the age of five itself. Denny later took up this challenge as an opportunity and studied sign language subsequently.

He attended the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. Later, he finished his bachelor’s in art and media with a concentration in photography and graphic design. Presently. he is pursuing his master’s in sign language education. He also works as an ASL mentor from his home in the Navajo nation.

Reacting to his performance at the Super Bowl, he said, “I just want to be able to inspire”. He is also hopeful of the fact that his appearance will raise awareness of North American Indian Sign Language. He is working to preserve the language which is getting lost despite its rich history.
