Sa’Myah Smith, LSU basketball player, passed out at the White House on Friday during President Joe Biden’s speech. She was helped off the stage and taken away in a wheelchair.

Biden and the White House were celebrating the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team’s national championship when Smith fainted. Medics were rushed into the East Room. The player was standing in the risers behind the podium.

“It’s a lot of standing. I apologize. It’s okay. It’s happened lots of times,” Biden said.

LSU coach Kim Mulkey said that Smith was fine.

“As you can see, we leave our mark where we go. Sa’myah planned that. No, Sa’Myah is fine, for those of you who are concerned. I’ll assure you of that. … She doesn’t want to leave. She wants to stand with us but she needs to be checked out,” the coach said.

The Connecticut men’s team will also visit the White House later Friday.

Who is Sa’Myah Smith?

Sa’Myah Smith is a forward for the LSU Tigers team. The freshman hails from DeSoto, Texas.

Smith, considered the No 57 player in the country and No 1 in Dallas by ESPN< went to DeSoto High School. She led them to back-to-back Texas Class 6A State Championships during her junior and senior seasons.

The freshman was one of the 10 players nominated for Dave Campbell’s Miss Texas Basketball Player of the Year Award. She was named the Dallas Morning New Player of the Year in 2022.

Smith scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the 2021 State Championship Game to earn MVP honors.

Sa’Myah Smith earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. She played in all 36 games for the Tigers as LSU’s first forward off the bench. She started two games and averaged 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds.

She had 38 blocks in the season and had the lone double-double of her freshman season in her college debut against Bellarmine with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
