Santiago Tomás Giménez, commonly known as Santi Gimenez, is a professional footballer who has recently made headlines for his standout performance during the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Final.
Who is Santi Gimenez?
Santi Gimenez was born in Argentina but represents the Mexico national team.
Gimenez’s club career began at Cruz Azul in Mexico, where he made his professional debut in 2017. After an impressive stint at Cruz Azul, he joined Feyenoord in July 2022. In the 2022-23 Eredivisie season, Gimenez’s exceptional goal-scoring prowess played a pivotal role in Feyenoord’s title triumph.
Despite the option to represent Argentina, Gimenez chose to play for Mexico due to his deep connection to the country, having lived there for most of his life. He earned his senior national team call-up in September 2020 and scored his first goal for Mexico in a friendly against Chile in December of the same year.
Gold Cup glory
Gimenez’s defining moment came during the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Final when he netted the 88th-minute winner, leading Mexico to victory over Panama. His goal secured Mexico’s record-extending ninth Gold Cup triumph, earning him praise as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
As the son of former Cruz Azul player Christian “Chaco” Gimenez, football runs in the family. Off the pitch, Santi Gimenez is known for his strong faith, having been baptized in January 2019. He is also married to Mexican model Fer Serrano.
