Georgia Tech, the institution from which Poole graduated, confirmed his death on Friday. He died in the Atlanta area with his family by his side. Poole was diagnosed with ALS, also recognized as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, two years prior.

Jim Poole excelled as a bullpen pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1990 and 2000. He had a memorable World Series performance in 1995 with the Cleveland Indians.
Poole, a Rochester, New York native, developed his college baseball abilities at Georgia Tech. He was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the ninth round of the 1988 MLB Draft. In 1990, Poole made his Major League Baseball debut with the Dodgers before being traded to the Texas Rangers later that year. He also made contributions during the course of his career to the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, and Baltimore Orioles.
In 1995, Poole’s left-handed skill, characterized by accuracy and proficiency against left-handed batters, made him a crucial component of the Indians’ bullpen. The squad made its first World Series appearance in forty years during this significant year.
Poole retired from professional baseball after the 2000 campaign, leaving behind a résumé that includes a 22-28 record and a 4.31 ERA across 431 games. He was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in 2022.
