Hong Kong democracy activist Agnes Chow arrested under national security law

Prominent Hong Kong democracy activist Agnes Chow was arrested on Monday, August 10, under China’s new national security, according to a Facebook post made by her account.

Chow was taken away by the police from her residence to the Tai Po Police station late on Monday night according to her Facebook account.

“It’s now confirmed that Agnes Chow has been arrested for ‘inciting secession’ under the national security law,” her Facebook account said.

Her lawyer said that the police reached Agnes’s residence with a search warrant that was issued on August 6.

In a previous update, Chow had posted that a group of police officers had arrived at her home.

According to an AFP report, a police source confirmed that Chow was among 10 people arrested on Monday in a national security investigation.

Earlier in the day media tycoon, Jimmy Lai too was arrested under the same new national security law imposed by Beijing in Hong Kong.

According to the New Security Law crimes of secession are punishable by a maximum sentence of life in prison.
