Islamic State gunmen killed at least 11
while 8 were left wounded  in a grenade
attack on a lookout point in western Baghdad on Sunday, reported AFP.

The jihadists fired at the tribal Hashed
forces stationed at Al-Radwaniyah, situated near the airport on the outskirts
of Baghdad.

According to AFP, there was, however, no
immediate responsibility by IS but a security source confirmed that the attack
was carried down by the Islamic State.

“IS attacked the monitoring tower,
killing five members of the tribal Hashed and six local people who had come to
help repel the attack,” AFP quoted a security source as saying.

The toll was confirmed by a medic who
told that the aggrieved were transferred to a hospital in Central Baghdad.

As per an AFP report, IS’s
sleeper cells have continued to wage hit-and-run attacks on security forces and
state infrastructure, particularly in desert areas where troops are stretched
thin.

However, Iraq declared IS’ defeat in the
country in 2017 after a three-year knockout aided by the US-led coalition but
the tie has significantly narrowed down its troops this year into three main
bases in Baghdad, Ain al-Asad in the west and Arbil in the north.
