Such a high number can only mean one thing: the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is returning for a new installment in 2023.

The annual Fourth-of-July competition will take place in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, at the intersection of Surf and Stillwell Avenues, where competitors will compete to consume the most hot dogs (with buns) in a 10-minute period.

Two food-eating titans who have dominated the tournament, Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo, will be back in battle to defend their crowns.

What time does the 2023 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest start?

Coverage of the women’s competition starts at 10:45 a.m. ET. The men’s competition will follow at 12 p.m. ET.

The women’s competition will be broadcast on ESPN3, while ESPN2 will air the men’s competition. Both can be streamed on the ESPN app.

How much money does the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest winner make?

Although consuming all those hot dogs has a cost, the top finishers are rewarded with cash and a belt resembling a WWE title.

Following is the normal distribution of the $40,000 total prize money among the top five eaters:

  • First place: $10,000
  • Second place: $5,000
  • Third place: $2,500
  • Fourth place: $1,500
  • Fifth place: $1,000

What is the record for hot dogs eaten in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest?

Joey Chestnut established the world record for most Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest hot dogs consumed at 76 in 2021. In 2020, the 39-year-old broke his own previous record, which stood at 75. Chestnut also set a record in 2018 by eating 74 hot dogs. He is currently ranked as the best eater in the world, and in 2023, he plans to increase that ranking.

How many times has Joey Chestnut won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest?

Chestnut’s victory in 2022 brought the contest’s total wins to 15. It’s the highest score of any contestant. In order to win, he consumed 63 hot dogs, 20 more than Geoffrey Esper, who came in second.

In 2007, Chestnut defeated Takeru Kobayashi, the six-time defending champion, to earn his first win. His lone defeat since then came when he faced Matt Stonie in 2015. In order to end the eight-year streak, Stonie had two more hot dogs than Chestnut (62 to 60). The lowest margin of victory for Chestnut was 10, which occurred in a 2017 matchup with Carmen Cincotti.

How many times has Miki Sudo won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest?

The top female eater and third-ranked eater overall is Sudo. The 38-year-old has excelled in each of her eight contests.

In 2011, Sonya Thomas won the first three races in the women’s division. Beginning in 2014, Sudo was in charge and triumphed each occasion until Michelle Lesco won the title in 2021. However, Sudo was unable to participate in the tournament because of her pregnancy.

Then, in 2022, Sudo made a comeback and triumphed by devouring 40 hot dogs. With 48 1/2 in 2020, she also broke the record for the most meals consumed by a woman.
