3 police officers injured after chase, shootout in Houston

A search was underway for the suspect who shot three officers with the Houston Police Department on Thursday afternoon following a chase. 

Cops responded to a report of a shooting at the home of the suspect’s girlfriend at 2.45 pm. When officers arrived, the suspect fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz vehicle and led police on a chase for several miles. The chase came to an end after the suspect’s vehicle crashed on McGowen Street. Soon after, he opened fire at the officers.

“Officers as they got out of vehicle, the suspect immediately fired upon officers, striking three officers. All the officers returned fire,” Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference.

The suspect, whose identity was not revealed, fled the scene in a car and then drove to a home located several miles northeast of where the crash occurred.

Officers surrounded the home at the suspect fired multiple times. He remained barricaded in the home Thursday evening and police were negotiating to get him out.

Meanwhile, all three of the injured officers were rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital and were in stable condition. While two of them were transported by another patrol officer’s vehicle, the third was taken by the Houston Fire Department.

One of the officers was shot in the arm, another was shot in the leg and the third was shot in the foot, said Doug Griffith, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union.

“We are just grateful to God they are all right,” Finner said.
