5 talking points from CNN’s poll on Donald Trump’s indictment

Former President Donald Trump was indicted by the Manhattan district attorney over hush-money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. According to a CCN Poll conducted by SSRS, 60% of Americans approve of Trump’s indictment. More than three-quarters of Americans believe that politics played at least some role in the decision to indict Trump. However, 52% say it played a major role.

Here are 5 key points from the survey:

1. The survey found that 60% of Americans approve of the former president being indicted, including 37% who strongly approve. Overall, 40% disapprove of the decision, including 25% who strongly disapprove. Democrats were largely unified in their support for the indictment as 94% approved and 6% disapproved. On the other hand, 79% of Republicans disapprove of the Trump indictment and 21% approve.

2. When asked about how major a part politics played in the indictment, a significant 76% said it played some part, with 52% believing it was a major reason and 23% saying it played a little part. Only 15% of voters said that politics had no role in the indictment, while 10% said they weren’t sure.

3. The Americans were evenly divided on how the indictment would impact US democracy as 31% said it would be strengthened and the same percentage said it would be weakened. Around 23% said the decision would have no impact on American democracy, while 15% said they weren’t sure.

4. In addition, Americans are divided about whether his actions were illegal or just unethical. About 37% said he acted illegally, 33% said unethically but not illegally, and the remaining 20% said they aren’t sure. Only 8% of independents said Trump did nothing wrong.

5. The survey released on Monday shows that the indictment has not had a major impact on opinions on Trump personally. According to the poll, he has a favorability rating of 34% favorable to 58% unfavorable, similar to the figure in a January CNN poll.
