Colorado lands at No. 5 on the list, in terms of US states enduring natural disasters.
The average household spends $220 annually on natural disasters. Each year, the state itself spends about $464 million on property damage brought on by weather-related events and natural disasters.
2017 was Colorado’s most expensive year, largely because it saw the biggest hailstorm in state history. Baseball-sized hail struck the west Denver region on May 8 of that year, resulting in $2.3 billion in property and vehicle damage.
Colorado designated 83 significant disasters between 1953 and 2019, the majority of which were floods and wildfires. Colorado reports 5,618 wildfires on average each year. The state had to pay more than $2 billion in damages as a result of one of the most expensive floods, which happened in September 2013. All of these extreme natural phenomena can occur in Colorado because of the state’s diversified topography.
These risks are all equally frightening and disruptive. Depending on how much damage is done during the incident, the financial impact may differ.

Other than the hailstorm in 2008, some of the most costly weather-related incidents in Colorado history were the Woodstock avalanche in 1884, the Windsor tornado in 2008, the earthquake in 2011, the floods in 2013, and the Hayman Fire in the Pike National Forest in 2022.
