Alex Murdaugh was found guilty in the double murder trial of the murders of his wife and son. The jury put forth a unanimous decision on Thursday.
Murdaugh was found guilty of two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of the brutal crime, the murder of his 52-year-old wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaughand 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh.
Murdaugh was expressionless while the verdicts were being read. His only remaining son, Buster Murdaugh, was seen wiping tears from his eyes. Murdaugh appeared to mouth “I love you” to Buster as he was being handcuffed.
When will Murdaugh be sentenced?
Judge Clifton Newman, the Prosecution and the Defense agreed to do sentencing for Alex Murdaugh on Friday morning starting at 9:30. He faces 30 years to life on each murder charge and up to five years on the weapons charges. If a life sentence is imposed it will be concurrent.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson did a post-trial press conference. He said that the efforts paid off well and succeeded to bring justice to Maggie and Paul Murdoch. He also said that it “brought justice for the people of South Carolina.” He thanked the whole team of attorneys starting with the lead prosecutor Creighton Waters.
All related parties agreed that the sentencing is to be handled at 9:30 am on Friday. Alex Murdaugh was placed in handcuffs and escorted out of the courtroom in silence.
