- Jerry Nadler said the repeated allegations and Cuomo's response to them "made it impossible for him to continue"
A number of New York Democrats have called for the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo, amid mounting allegations of sexual harassment and groping levelled against him. Among those diplomats are Reps Jerry Nadler and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who on Friday joined the calls for Cuomo to step down, reported the Associated Press.
“The repeated accusations against the governor, and the manner in which he has responded to them, have made it impossible for him to continue to govern at this point,” Nadler said, AP reported.
Multiple women, most of whom are his former aides, have accused the 63-year-old Governor of sexual harassment and he has denied them all and has refused to step down.
In a joint statement, lawmakers Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman termed the latest allegations against Cuomo as “alarming”.
The latest report “raises concerns about the present safety and well-being of the administration’s staff,” the lawmakers said, Reuters reported.
“These allegations have all been consistent and highly-detailed, and there are also credible media reports substantiating their accounts,” they added.
On Thursday, New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said he had authorised the judiciary committee to open an impeachment investigation into sexual misconduct allegations levelled against Cuomo by six women.
