California Gov. Gavin Newsom to face recall elections. Hope for Caitlyn Jenner?

California Governor Gavin Newsom is likely to face a blend of review and special elections from the state’s voters as a petition, which was initiated by the members of the Republican party, successfully gathered enough nods to trigger the elections, according to statements made by state officials on Monday.

Last week on Friday transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner confirmed her plans to run for California Governor. “I’m in! California is worth fighting for,” the television personality said in an Instagram post.

Shirley Weber, California’s Secretary of State said that the petition garnered enough valid signatures to start the process of recalling Governor Gavin Newsom. The referendum requires just 12% of the voters to agree, reported AFP.

The vote comes after Democratic Governor Newsom faced backlash from the people of California after he allegedly mismanaged the state’s COVID-19 situation. More than 1.6 million residents of the state pitched in to trigger the referendum.

Similar review votes have been held in the United States before while one being held in California in 2003 after the highly celebrated actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected to be the state’s governor, reported AFP.

The voting, which is likely to be scheduled for November 2021, will ask the voters to decide the fate of Newsom as California’s governor. Additionally, voters will decide who will fill in for the position, if a replacement is triggered.

However, in the democrat-dominated state of California, a defeat for Newsom is unlikely in the recall vote.
