CDC recommends use of Pfizer jab for children aged 12-15 in US
- 14 votes were recorded in favour of the recommendation
- One member abstained their vote
- FDA approved the emergency use for children above age 12 in US just days ago
An advisory panel of the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday recommended the use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children between the age of 12-15.
The 15 member panel saw one abstention while all remaining members voted in favour of the recommendation, according to US media reports.
US President Joe Biden called the decision a “giant step” in America’s battle against the coronavirus pandemic on Twitter. He wrote, “Today, an independent advisory committee to the CDC voted to recommend the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for adolescents 12 and older.”
Just days ago, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the emergency use of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine for children above the age of 12.
Dr Sara Oliver, who works at the Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases of the CDC was responsible for briefing the advisory panel on the risks and benefits of the Pfizer COVID-19 jab, reported CNN.
Oliver, in her statements, highlighted that minors between the age of 12 and 17 were in the high-risk category in terms of severity of the disease.
She said, “There have been over 1.5 million reported cases and over 13,000 hospitalizations to date among adolescents 12 to 17 years”, reported CNN.
