The California Highway Patrol has closed the 55 Freeway in Orange County, California after a child was shot on Friday. The victim was rushed to Children’s Hospital, but the nature of the injuries has not been revealed, local reports state. Authorities are investigating the incident.

According to local reports, the shooting took place at 8:11 AM local time on the northbound 55 Freeway at Chapman Avenue. Authorities suspect but cannot confirm if the incident is related to the recent spree of BB gun attacks on Southern California freeway motorists.

However, with an ongoing investigation, the transition from the eastbound 22 to the northbound 55 has been closed. Investigators formed a line the width of the freeway, searching for evidence, local media states. The closures were expected to be in place through at least midday, the CHP told reporters.

The state has reported about 50 BB or pellet gun shootings since May 4.
