Democrats urge Lindsey Graham to delay SC nominee until next year
- Democrats pointed to precedent set after the 2016 election year
- They said there can't be different set of rules for Democratic and Republican president
- Graham had opposed the SC nomination in 2016
Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sunday urged the Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham to delay the vote on a Supreme Court nominee until next year. In a letter addressed to Graham they reminded him that he had opposed a similar move in 2016.
“In light of the vacancy created by Justice Ginsburg’s death, we call upon you to state unequivocally and publicly that you will not consider any nominee to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat until after the next President is inaugurated,” the Democratic senators wrote.

Earlier, in 2016 Graham had said that a Supreme Court vacancy should not be filled during an election year, adding “use my words against me.”
“I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said, ‘Let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination,’ ” he said in 2016 after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
However, he was quick to walk back those remarks.

Highlighting this the Democrats wrote that there can’t be one set of rules for a Republican President and another set for a Democratic President adding that “considering a nominee before the next inauguration would be wholly inappropriate.”
On Saturday, Graham had said that he will support President Donald Trump “in any effort to move forward” regarding the recent vacancy created by the passing of Justice Ginsburg.
