Alan Wilson, South Carolina Attorney General, addressed media in a press conference after Alex Murdaugh’s guilty verdict on Thursday. The 49-year-old thanked Creighton Waters and his team for ‘their efforts’.

“Our criminal justice worked tonight, it gave a voice to Maggie and Paul Murdaugh,” Wilson said.

“Hey, Alan Wilson, this is not your show. Just another typical politician who is drawn like a fly to the bright TV lights,” a Twitter user said.

“#AlanWilson literally just thanked himself for appointing #CreightonWaters lead prosecutor…fuck off Alan,” another one added.

“I’m guessing this means Alan Wilson will be running for governor soon,” a third one tweeted.

Wilson said that Alex Murdaugh’s house of cards had come tumbling down after an all-guilty verdict handed up by a jury on the first day of deliberations.

Today’s verdict proves your position and power in life do not matter: no one is above the law, and that includes Alex Murdaugh,” Wilson said. “It’s been a long six weeks, but Maggie and Paul Murdaugh deserved justice, and they certainly did not deserve to brutally die at the hands of someone who was supposed to love and protect them,” he added.

The jury deliberated for more than two hours to convict Murdaugh of killing his wife and son. He is likely to face a life sentence pending what a judge finds during sentencing on Friday morning.

“Alex Murdaugh’s house of cards, built on the foundation of lies, manipulation, and theft, came crashing down,” Wilson said in a statement. “Let this be a warning: no matter who you are, if you break the law, the truth will come out and you will be brought to justice,” he said.

Creighton Waters, Assistant Deputy Attorney General, who led the prosecution in the trial, called the process leading up to Thursday’s conviction as a “long and exhaustive effort.” The sentencing for Murdaugh will start at 9.30 am on Monday.
