Doherty High School: Fire breaks out in new under-construction building

In Worcester, Massachusetts, a new building at a $293 million school construction project caught fire on Monday.

Just after 3 o’clock, firefighters were called to Doherty High School where they discovered strong smoke and flames emanating from a building under construction.

The fire was extinguished using aerial equipment, and according to officials, it took around 30 minutes to get it under control.

A worker was injured and brought to a nearby hospital. Although the individual’s health wasn’t immediately known, the Worcester Fire Department categorized the injuries as minor.

Classes will be conducted on Tuesday, according to the administration.

Social media users shared videos of a massive smoke plume originating from a nearby construction site. On radar, the plume was discernible.

According to the city, firefighters were on the scene close to Highland Street and Newton Square.

Drivers are being advised by the Worcester Police Department to stay away from the Highland St. area.

The new school structure that is now being built is scheduled to open in August 2024.

The Doherty High School is a public high school located in Worcester, Massachusetts. It commenced operations in the fall of 1966 to take the position of Worcester Classical High School and Worcester Commerce High School, both of which had shut down.

There are about 2,000 pupils enrolled in the school in grades 9 through 12 from the Worcester Public Schools district. The school serves the west side of Worcester, which includes the communities on June, Mill, Pleasant, and May Streets, as well as Tatnuck Square, Salisbury Street, Forest Grove, and Newton Square.

The school’s building is located at 299 Highland Street in Worcester, Massachusetts.
