The Florida beachfront apartment block collapse, which has already caused one confirmed death, resulted in at least 99 people being unaccounted for, according to US media reports.

Although it is unclear how many people were present in the building at the time of the incident, multiple reports quoting the Miami-Dade Police Department, suggest that 99 people have been missing. However, 53 residents of the Champlain Towers have been accounted for, reported AFP.

“Fifty-three people accounted for, as of right now, 99 unaccounted for,” Freddy Ramirez, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, told a news conference.

He added, “That could be for different reasons, we’re still in the early stages”, reported AFP.

At least one person has been killed in the incident, which triggered an emergency response from local and state authorities in an attempt to rescue those stuck under the ruins.

US President Joe Biden, on Thursday, offered federal assistance to Florida authorities in the rescue and recovery efforts. The help of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was extended by the President.
