Days after ex-officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering African-American George Floyd, in an act of vandalism, a mural dedicated to Floyd was defaced by painting a racial slur on it.

The culprits have not been identified yet.

The mural was spray-painted in red letters and is located a few miles away from Third Ward, the place where George Floyd grew up, reported abc13.

Someone or a group of people wrote the words “N***** lives don’t matter” on the iconic mural.

Floyd died last year after ex-veteran police officer Derek Chauvin pressed down his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes until he chocked. The mural was painted shortly after the incident and became quite famous, as per local media reports.

Chauvin has been convicted for third-degree murder, second-degree murder and manslaughter. The court is yet to announce his sentence.

The artist of the mural, Daniel Anguilu, while talking to Khou11 said, “As a human, it’s just wrong to do something like that; knowing that we’re healing and knowing that we’re in pain as a community. As a person of colour myself … I understand hate, but I also learned to navigate and deal with it in a different way — and for me, that is art.”

As soon as Anguilu heard of the vandalism, he immediately set to repair the damage, local media reports.

“It’s a reminder that we just have to keep working and continue to do the work that we believe in,” he added.

According to Khou11, the Houston Police Department is investigating the matter.
