Police responded to reports of shots fired at Clay Street in Henderson, on Thursday night, and found that the shooting took place at Harbor House Christian Center around 7:30 PM.

In a Facebook post, the authorities stated “The Henderson Police Department has responded to 804 Clay Street (Harbor House) in reference to an active shooter. Harbor House is listed as a homeless shelter and its Facebook page says it is a “safe harbor for men in need. Harbor House is a Christian-based organization dedicated to bringing men up in the community, by promoting a God-based foundation.” The establishment has been around since 1989 and as per Henderson City Commissioner Robert Pruitt, tonight’s incident puts a scar on the place’s history, Courier & Press reported.

The Evansville daily added that a Henderson city bus took the other 10 residents to the Salvation Army for the night.

Brian McClain, a resident of the shelter, told Courier & Press about how the shooting went down. “He looked at me funny and shut the light back off, and when he went out the dorm room, it wasn’t five seconds later I heard shots”, he said, adding, “Finally I got my mind about me and unlocked the window and got out. And another dude ran into the dorm and said ‘man I think I’m shot.’ And he got shot right here in the (left) shoulder.”

He described the two victims as “two of the nicest guys you’ve ever met”.
