Mauree Turner became the first non-binary US state legislator following her win in Oklahoma’s 88th district, media reports stated. If that was not enough, Turner became the first Muslim individual to be elected to the state’s legislature.

Beating Republican candidate Kelly Barlean, the 27-year-old won in her district, which includes the democratic leaning Oklahoma city, in the heavily Republican state of Oklahoma.

Taking to Twitter, she wrote, ” I have a lot of feelings about tonight. But overall, I’m grateful for HD88 granting me this opportunity. I hate SQ805 & so many other things slipped through our fingers… But I’m ready to fight hard as hell so they never do again.”

Turner announced her candidacy in February, saying “it has never been a more important time for those closest to our state’s problems to be structuring the solutions.”

Her win comes after the US state of Delaware created history on November 4 by electing the country’s first transgender activist, Sarah McBride, as a senator.
