- Chancellor Olaf Scholz called it a "necessary administrative step"

Germany has taken steps to delay the process of sanctioning the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
In Berlin, he told reporters that his administration was taking the measures in response to Russia’s activities in Ukraine.

“That sounds technical, but it is the necessary administrative step so there can be no certification of the pipeline and without this certification, Nord Stream 2 cannot begin operating,” Scholz said.
Although the pipeline project was completed, the project still required regulatory approval from German authorities before the gas could be supplied.

The pipeline has caused friction with the United States, which is concerned that it will increase Europe’s reliance on Russia for energy.
US President Joe Biden said earlier this month that if Russian tanks and troops breached the Ukraine border, the project would be doomed.
