Capitol Riots panel says it has enough evidence to book Trump

A committee charged with investigating the United States Capitol riots has “a tremendous amount of testimony and documents” to refer former President Donald Trump for criminal charges, a member said. Only two Republican lawmakers sit on the House Select Committee.

“It is definitely clear what President Trump was doing. What a number of people around him were doing. That they knew it was unlawful.”, Liz Cheney said in a statement.

“They did it anyway”, the Vice Chairperson of the House Select Committee said while speaking to CNN. She added that the panel had not yet finalised if it would be referring the former President for the criminal charges.

“I think what we have seen is a massive and well organized and well-planned effort that used multiple tools to try to overturn an election”, the Wyoming Republican added.

The statement comes just days after Ivanka Trump, former President Trump’s daughter and political advisor, spoke to the committee without being subpoenaed. Ivanka, 40, was “not chatty” but gave a helpful testimony to the House Select Committee, according to media reports citing chairman and Representative Bennie Thompson.

Former Trump advisers Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino were recently held in contempt of the United States Congress for their monthlong refusal to comply with subpoenas rendered by the House committee’s investigation into the attack on the Capitol.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy accused the January 6 committee of “criminalizing dissent,” defended Scavino as a “good man” and lobbed harsh criticism at members of the committee, some by name. “Let’s be honest, this is a political show trial,” McCarthy said.

Trump has not faced any criminal charges in connection with the Capitol riots so far and has denied any wrongdoing.
