Before his departure to Washington for his Presidential inauguration, US President-elect Joe Biden bid a farewell to Delaware, his home state, with tears in his eyes.

While addressing his guests at the national guard base, which is named after his son Beau who succumbed to cancer in 2015, he said, “It’s deeply personal that our journey to Washington starts here. “I only have one regret, that he’s not here. Because we should be introducing him as president.”

On January 20, Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the US at his inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol.

The 78-year-old Democrat also addressed his own mortality — an unusual direction given he is about to take the helm of the most powerful nation in the world.

He said, with tears in his eyes, “Excuse the emotion. But when I die, Delaware will be written on my heart.”

Biden also talked about the historical precedent that was set by the recent US Presidential elections as Kamala Harris, the first daughter of an immigrant, a black woman was elected as the Vice President of the US.

“Don’t tell me things can’t change. They can, and they do,” Biden said. “That’s America. That’s Delaware.”
