Malibu earthquake: 3.8-magnitude tremors shake Los Angeles early Sunday

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake was reported 12 miles from Malibu early on Sunday.

The epicenter was located 18 miles from Westlake Village, 19 miles from Thousand Oaks, and 21 miles from Agoura Hills and Calabasas. The quake was reported a little before 2:30 a.m. Some residents in downtown Los Angeles reported feeling light shaking of the ground. The quake happened 40 miles west-southwest of Los Angeles.

It is not clear if anyone was injured or if there was any structural damage from the quake. USGS has asked those who felt the small earthquake to report it on the agency’s website.

In the past 10 days, there has been one earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater. On average, five earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 occur per year in the greater Los Angeles area.
