Joel Greenberg, a former county-level tax collector in Flordia and a crucial player in the ongoing federal investigation against Representative Matt Gaetz, is likely to come into agreement with federal officials through a plea deal, which will be brokered by prosecuting team, according to statements made by the legal teams involved in the case.

The upcoming deal is likely to act as a stepping stone for the United States Department of Justice to get crucial details on Gaetz as it has the potential to mount legal pressure on the Florida lawmaker.

Fritz Scheller, who is the current legal representation for Greenberg, appealed for a plea date extending to May 15, 2021. If no plea deal is struck in the given period, the case is likely to make its way to a trial. Roger Handberg, assistant US attorney said, “We believe this case will be a plea”, reported CNN.

Gaetz, who is known to be a close ally of former US President Donald Trump, is under investigation for allegedly sexually engaging with a minor. The accusations have gathered several critical notes about the Republican lawmaker as investigations are underway to determine whether the minor was paid to travel overseas.
