Morocco and Israel to resume diplomatic relations

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that Morocco and Israel have agreed to resume full diplomatic relations and his administration has in turn recognised the kingdom’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara.

About the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara Trump tweeted: “Today, I signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal is the ONLY basis for a just and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity!”.

Morocco has also confirmed the resumption of diplomatic ties with Israel lauded as “historic” a decision by Washington to recognise Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region, AFP reported.

Following a telephone call between US President Donald Trump and King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan ruler said his country would “resume official contacts and diplomatic relations with minimal delay” with Israel, according to a statement by the royal palace.

Morocco and Israel had respectively maintained liaison offices in Tel Aviv and Rabat in the 1990s, before closing them in 2000.
