A tornado tore through Moss Point, causing significant damage and power outages, according to Mayor Billy Knight, the National Weather Service, and eyewitnesses at the scene.

Eight people were initially trapped inside Merchants & Marine Bank but managed to escape safely, though the exact circumstances are unclear. The tornado wreaked havoc on structures such as First Baptist Church, Moss Point High School’s gym, and surrounding homes, while the downtown area near City Hall appeared relatively spared.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

Approximately 6,000 residents in Jackson County, particularly in Moss Point and Gautier, are now without electricity. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing heat advisories in Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties, heightening the risk for those without air conditioning.

Although the tornado warning for parts of Jackson County has been lifted, strong winds, hail, and a severe thunderstorm warning persist. The tornado was initially spotted around 3 p.m. near Moss Point and had been moving eastward at a speed of 25 mph.

Photos shared on Twitter by storm chaser Daniel Shaw illustrate downed power lines and damaged roofs in Moss Point. Surrounding areas are also experiencing severe weather, with flash flood warnings issued for Pascagoula, Gautier, and Moss Point.
