Nikki Haley, the former United States ambassador to the United Nations, on Monday said that she would not run against her former boss and ex-US president
Donald Trump if he chose to contest the 2024 presidential election, adding that she
would support him.  Haley, who
has previously also served as the South Carolina Governor, is a potentially
powerful candidate for the Republican party for the 2024 elections.

A woman of colour, Haley has been on the radar of her
party to lead the GOP ticket for president in the future, as per a report by the
Associated Press.

A Trump candidature, however, would make it difficult for any
other Republican candidate to get traction, with the former president being a popular face among Republican voters across the US.

“I would not run if President Trump ran. And I would
talk to him about it. That’s something that we will have a conversation about,
at some point, if that decision is something that has to be made”, AP quoted
Haley as saying.

Haley reportedly said that the last time she and Trump
talked was after the Presidential election in 2020 but before the January 6
attack on the US Capitol.

Significantly, Haley had criticised the former president for
his role in the storming of the Capitol building, but soon got back to defending
him.

Since resigning in 2016 as the South Carolina governor and
joining Trump’s cabinet, Haley has maintained a balance on Trump and
his actions even as Republican leaders split sharply for or against the
former president’s actions.

During her two years representing the US at the United Nations,
she followed a similar path, criticising Trump’s actions at times but managing
not to appear in the line of fire from the 45th president of the US.
