A “shelter in place” order was issued late Wednesday at Northwestern University after three teens were shot, out of which one was killed, and has been lifted as there is no active threat noted in the area.

The shooting took place at Clark Street Beach, just south of the Evanston campus. The order was lifted before 10 p.m. and the students and faculty were given an “all clear” by the authorities. “There is no danger to life safety at this time and no longer a need to shelter in place. Police are confident the suspects are no longer in the area,” the university wrote in a statement.

In a tweet at 8:42 p.m., the university had first urged the community to find shelter. For more than an hour after that, the shelter-in-place order remained in place. The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m. The suspects who are believed to have fled north on Sheridan Road in a sedan after the shooting, are still at large.

Two of the victims of the shooting have been transported to hospitals. The university wrote in a 9:40 p.m. update that the police are searching the university’s campus and surveillance footage for the suspects’ whereabouts. “We know this is a stressful situation and appreciate your continued patience and cooperation. We will provide updated information as quickly as we receive it,” the statement said.

According to Evanston police, Sheridan Road is closed from Davis to Clark Streets. “But there does not appear to be a continued threat,” police wrote.

The identities of the victims are not known. It has, however, been confirmed that the victims were not university students.
