Pick a Black Woman as Vice President candidate, Black men urge Biden

Mounting the pressure on Presumptive Democratic candidate, more than 100 Black men wrote to Joe Biden urging him to chose a Black woman as the Vice President candidate. Earlier, 700 Black women had written to Biden condemning the racist, sexist attacks against Vice President nominees.

“Failing to select a Black woman means you will lose the election. Black women are defining the future of politics so it’s time you let one define the future of your campaign,” the letter said. They also said that the election should not be about choosing between the lesser of two evils.

“We don’t want to vote the devil we know versus the devil we don’t because we are tired of voting for devils—period,” it added. They also said that Black women have been asked to do everything from rally the troops to risk their lives for the Democratic Party with no acknowledgment, no respect, no visibility, and not enough support.

The signatories included many prominent names like rapper and actor Sean Combs, co-host of the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club” Lenard Mckelvey, the attorney of George Floyd’s family Ben Crump and Michael Eric Dyson, a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and professor of sociology at Georgetown University.

Putting an end to the speculations, Biden is expected to formally announce his choice this week, ahead of the Democratic National Convention. Kamala Harris, Rep. Val Demings of Florida, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice and Rep. Karen Bass of California are among the Black women being considered.
