Protestor climbs DC bridge after ‘treasonous attack on the rights of women’

On Friday, an abortion rights activist scaled the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC, to protest the Supreme Court’s judgement to overturn Roe v. Wade.

According to the District’s Department of Transportation, the bridge is temporarily closed due to “safety concerns involved with protest activity and will remain in effect until further notice.”

Guido Reichstadter shared videos and images of himself from the top of the bridge, where he waved a giant green banner, on social media. Green has long been associated with abortion rights. Reichstadter also planted a “Don’t tread on my uterus” flag on the bridge.

“I climbed up the top of the Frederick Douglas Memorial bridge this morning because the Supreme Court is engaged in an unconstitutional treasonous attack on the rights of women in this country,” Reichstadter stated in a TikTok video he broadcast from the bridge-top.

Reichstadter informed CNN over the phone that he plans to stay on the bridge as long as he physically can. According to Reichstadter, he is without water because his bottle slipped out of his luggage when he arrived at the summit.

He said that while many individuals in the United States reject the Supreme Court’s decision, their support is primarily passive, which he believes is insufficient to ensure that women across the country have access to abortions.

Following the announcement that the Supreme Court had overruled Roe v. Wade, activist groups began planning protests for Friday.

CNN confirmed that at least 70 protests have been planned.

Among the activist groups planning the events are Planned Parenthood, Bans Off Our Bodies, and Women’s March.

Protests are expected or are already taking place in Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and Houston.
