Sarah McBride is first transgender state senator in US

The US state of Delaware created history on November 4 by electing the country’s first transgender activist, Sarah McBride, as a senator, reports BBC. She was appointed to Delware’s General assembly after beating Republican
Steve Washington.
Sarah, whose victory is considered to be an inspiration for the Transgender community, immediately expressed her gratitude towards voters via a tweet.
“We did it. We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you” stated the tweet

According to the LGBTQ victory fund, Sarah joins four other
transgender state legislature officials but is the first ever state senator to
be elected from the community.

LGBTQ victory fund president called McBride’s victory a hope for the innumerable trans
people dreaming for a bright future.
“Her
victory will inspire more trans people to follow in her footsteps and run for
public office.” Quoted BBC
Having said that, McBride also becomes the highest ranking elected
transgender official following the remarkable victory as per BBC
Sarah’s political career started as an intern at White House during
former President Barack Obama’s term and distinguished herself by becoming the
first transgender individual to deliver a speech at the 2016 Democratic
National Convention

Later, she served as a press secretary for the
Human Rights Campaign.
Furthermore, Taylor Small became the Vermont’s first and country’s fifth transgender representative, taking 43 percent and 41 percent of the vote in her two districts.
“5th trans legislator in the nation!” she tweeted.
Their wins come just a few years after Democrat Danica Roem became the first openly trans lawmaker in the US. Roem was elected to Virginia’s state assembly in 2017.
In 2018, Vermont Democrat Christine Hallquist became the first openly transgender person nominated for governor by a major party in the United States.
