The father of the Texas shooter, who opened fire at at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday killing 19 children and two teachers, apologized for his son’s actions and said that he was shocked.

Salvador Ramos, 42, spoke to the Daily Beast on Thursday saying that he never expected that his son – identified as Salvador Rolando Ramos – would commit such a crime.

“I never expected my son to do something like that,” the father said. “He should’ve just killed me, you know, instead of doing something like that to someone.”

The younger Ramos shot his 66-year-old grandmother in the face before he stormed into the Uvalde school “unobstructed” and carried out the attack, which is said to be one of the deadliest mass shootings in Texas history. The gunman was killed at the scene by responding law enforcement officers.

“They killed my baby man,” he said, adding: “I’m never gonna see my son again, just like they’re not gonna see their kids. And that hurts me.”

Talking about his relationship with his son, the elder Ramos said said that he had not been in his son’s life much as of late as his job was away from Uvalde. He also said that his son had a strained relationship with his mother.

Despite the massacre his son had caused, the elder Ramos said that his son “was a good person.”

“He was a quiet person, stuck to himself. He didn’t bother nobody. People were always bothering him,” the father said, adding that he was bullied over his clothes by his peers.

Friends and relatives have said Ramos had been bullied throughout middle school and junior high for a speech impediment.

The 18-year-old also reportedly had an abusive relationship with his mother, Adriana Reyes, who allegedly struggled with drug use. Just two months ago, the junior Ramos had a fight with his mother over wifi disconnection and left home to live with his grandparents.

In an interview, the shooter’s grandfather said that he was unaware his grandson had kept a gun in the house.
