Former President Donald Trump expressed his jubilation on Truth Social after Republican Utah Senator Mitt Romney’s announcement that he would not seek re-election. Romney made his intentions clear through a video posted on Twitter, confirming that his Senate seat would become vacant in January 2025.

In classic Trump fashion, the former president seized the moment to share his enthusiasm, exclaiming in all caps, “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA, THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.” Trump went on to refer to Romney, somewhat humorously, as “MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO,” before underlining that Romney had decided not to pursue a second term in the U.S. Senate. Trump didn’t mince words, asserting that Romney had not served with distinction during his tenure.

Trump’s celebration continued as he remarked on the thwarted primary battle that was expected to ensue against Romney. With Romney’s decision not to seek re-election, Trump saw this as a victorious outcome. He concluded his statement with a familiar rallying cry, “CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

It’s important to note the history between Trump and Romney, which has been marked by notable disagreements. During the 2016 campaign, Trump was highly critical of Romney, suggesting that he had “choked like a dog” in the 2012 presidential race against Barack Obama. Trump even claimed that Romney had desperately sought his endorsement in 2012 and insinuated that Romney would have gone to great lengths for it, stating that he would have “dropped to his knees” for Trump’s support.

In essence, Trump’s reaction to Romney’s retirement announcement reflects the continuing political dynamics within the Republican Party and the colorful exchanges that have defined Trump’s interactions with key figures in American politics.
