- Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of nuclear terror
- No immediate rise in radiation was reported in the area
A nuclear
powerplant in Ukraine, Europe’s largest, caught fire Friday following Russian
aggression at the site. Panic spread as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear powerplant
caught fire triggering fears of a Chernobyl-like disaster. Local authorities,
however, said no immediate rise in radiation was detected and “essential”
powerplant equipment remained unaffected.
Mikhail Podolayak,
advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, uploaded a one
minute and 27 seconds long video of the fire engulfing the nuclear powerplant.

“Russian army is
firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear powerplant in
Europe. Fire has already broken out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger
that Chernobyl!! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters,
establish a security zone,” Dmytro Kuleba, a Ukrainian minister wrote on
Twitter.
After the fire broke
out, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of resorting to “nuclear
terror” and sought help from United States’ President Joe Biden and United
Kingdom PM Boris Johnson. Following which, Biden urged Moscow to allow
emergency responders, including firefighters, enter the nuclear powerplant and
bring the fire under control.
The 44-year-old president
said, “If there is an explosion – that’s the end for everyone. The end for
Europe. The evacuation of Europe. Only urgent action by Europe can stop the
Russian troops. Do not allow the death of Europe from a catastrophe at a
nuclear power station.”
Following a
conversation between the Ukrainian President and UK PM Boris Johnson, Johnson’s
office said that the British prime minister will seek an emergency United
Nations Security Council meeting. “The Prime Minister said the reckless actions
of Putin could now directly threaten the safety of all Europe,” Johnson’s
office said.
“He said (the
United Kingdom) would do everything it could to ensure the situation did not
deteriorate further,” Johnson’s office said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau said he spoke to the Ukrainian President about the attacks on the
powerplant.
