Washington footbridge collapse leaves at least 6 injured

A pedestrian bridge collapsed in Washington DC on Wednesday injuring at least six people, according to the emergency response services of the city.

The incident happened around noon at Route 295 between Kenilworth Avenue and Polk Street NE, according to reports from Fox News.

At least four victims have been transferred to nearby hospitals, according to the DC Fire and Emergency Services.

The collapse also resulted in damages to surrounding vehicles, one of which reportedly has a leaky diesel tank. A hazmat team has been dispatched to contain the fuel leak.

The incident has caused road closures and traffic disturbances in the area. Both north and southbound lanes on Route 295 will be temporarily inaccessible due to the collapse.
