US President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden concentrated their efforts on the key state of Florida on Friday. The president sought to raise enthusiasm for an economic recovery and declare that the US will not go back to lockdown in a bid to counter polls that show him slightly behind in the state.

He again played down the dangers of COVID-19 in favor of reopening businesses.”They will allow you nothing,” the Republican said in Tampa, referring to Democrats.

“We’re never going to lockdown again. We’re open for business,” he added.

Biden currently has a small edge in Florida, according to polling averages, but a huge turnout on Election Day by Trump supporters could be enough to offset the former vice president’s expected advantage from mail-in ballots. The president predicted a massive “red wave” in the elections and mocked the polls that are predicting his defeat.

Biden addressed a drive-in rally in Broward County north of Miami, the first of his two Florida rallies on Thursday.

“I’m not going to shut down the economy,” the former vice president said.

“I’m not going to shut down the country. But I am going to shut down the virus,” he added.

Florida, the biggest presidential battleground state, is expected to report its results relatively quickly on Tuesday night, which could set the tone  for how Americans view the early outcome of the presidential race.

“If Florida goes blue, it’s over,” Mr. Biden said.
