Weicker was a dedicated fighter for disabled people’s rights, the first Republican to demand President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation, and a strong moderate voice in Washington at a time when the city was starting to slip towards political polarisation in the late 20th century. He had been married to Claudia Weicker since 1984.

His first marriage, to Marie Louise Godfrey, lasted from 1953 until their divorce in 1977. They were parents of three children, Scott, Gray, and Brian. The next year, he wed his secretary Camille Butler. Their six-year union was deemed ‘tumultuous’ by The Connecticut Mirror, and it ended in divorce. He had two sons with her, Sonny and Lowell P. Weicker III, known as Tre.

“At home, he was the center of our universe never failing in his love and enthusiasm for family,” Weicker’s family said in a statement. His 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren have known him as ‘Pop’.

Weicker’s passing signifies the end of an era in Connecticut politics as well as in American politics at a time when conflict is at an all-time high and dividing the country more than it has since the Vietnam War. Weicker was also the final surviving member of the Senate Watergate Committee, which conducted a series of historically significant public hearings investigating the crisis in the spring and into the autumn of 1973.
