Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, a mathematician with a Harvard education who withdrew to a run-down cabin in the Montana woods and launched a 17-year bombing campaign that left three people dead and 23 injured, passed away on Saturday. He was 81.

FBI-designated “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski passed away at the federal prison medical facility in Butner, North Carolina, according to Kristie Breshears, a federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, who talked to The Associated Press. He was discovered unconscious in his cell early on Saturday and was pronounced dead at 8 a.m., according to her. The cause of death wasn’t known right away.

He compelled The Washington Post and The New York Times to make the difficult choice to publish his 35,000-word manifesto, “Industrial Society and Its Future,” in September 1995. In it, he stated that contemporary culture and technology were causing people to feel helpless and alienated.

But it ultimately brought him down. David Kaczynski and Linda Patrik, David’s wife, noticed the tone of the work and alerted the FBI, which had been looking for the “Unabomber” for years in the nation’s longest, priciest manhunt.

Patrik claimed that she recognized concepts from letters her husband David Kaczynski had received from his brother in the text that contained similar-sounding thoughts. After the family finally made the decision to inform the FBI, Kaczynski was eventually taken into custody in his Montana cabin on April 3, 1995 by a 9-man SWAT team.

“When she said, ‘Well, I think maybe your brother’s the Unabomber,’ I thought, ‘Well, this is not anything to worry about. Ted’s never been violent. I’ve never seen him violent,'” David Kaczynski said in the interview. “I couldn’t imagine that he would do what the Unabomber had done.”

“It was a nightmare,” David Kaczynski, who as a child had idolized his older brother, said in a 2005 speech at Bennington College. “I was literally thinking, ‘My brother’s a serial killer, the most wanted man in America.’”
